8 Dimensions of Wellness

Social

Social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. Our relationships can offer support during difficult times. Social wellness involves building healthy, nurturing, and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you.

Intellectual

Intellectual wellness encompasses all aspects of wellbeing pertaining to brain health and growth via thought-provoking mental activities. Examples include the consistent pursuit of education, writing, reading, stretching your creative muscle, and pursuing hobbies that help you learn and grow.

Occupational

Occupational wellness encompasses all aspects of wellbeing pertaining to personal satisfaction in your job/career. Examples include finding a work life balance, engaging in motivating and interesting work, and communicating + collaborating with others.

Environmental

Environmental wellness encompasses all areas of health that relate to your environment and in turn, how that environment can impact human health. Environmental wellness includes eco-friendly considerations, active participation in programs that support environmental health, sustainability, and the use of sustainable products.

Spiritual

Spiritual wellness encompasses all aspects of wellbeing pertaining to the search for purpose and meaning in life. This may include the belief in a higher power, but spiritual wellness does not have to be aligned with a religion. Examples include journaling to build awareness, going to church + praying, meditating, and otherwise spending time with oneself.

Emotional

Emotional wellness can be defined as one’s ability to successfully handle life’s stresses and adapt to change and challenges. It encompasses the knowledge and skills to identify personal feelings and the ability to handle those emotions.  Examples include identifying your feelings, developing coping skills, and attending therapy.

Physical

Physical wellness encompasses all areas of health that relate to physical aspects of the body. These are nutrition, exercise, physical disease prevention, weight management, substance use, and more. Examples of this include working out, eating a balanced diet, and going to the doctor.

Financial

Financial wellness encompasses all aspects of wellbeing pertaining to finances including knowledge and skills of financial planning and managing expenses. Examples include building a relationship with your finances, budgeting, learning financial literacy, understanding your credit score, and debt management.
